Uber Shape is an endless runner with one goal: challenging classic endless runner gameplay. The game features fast, minimalistic graphics, a procedurally generated world and cityscape and a fully dynamic day-night cycle. The core gameplay is based on the classic tap-to-jump mechanic, providing a simple and immediately recognizable way for players to interact with the game. As players race through the world, they can try to collect shapes identical to theirs to trigger swift shape changes, slowing themselves down and allowing them to survive longer. Or, more daring and experienced players can choose to collect different shapes, speeding them up and gaining them extra distance, as well as an extra challenge. Regardless of play style, players can collect coins scattered throughout the world to spend on various shop items to enhance gameplay.
Uber Shape began development in September 2015. It was around that time that Matt DiDomenico, the game’s creator, was awarded an Apple TV development kit as part of Apple’s developer lottery. It was this that sparked the idea for a simple, gameplay-driven endless runner for the platform, and thus Uber Shape was born. No engine had full support for tvOS at the time, and so Matt decided to use Apple’s own cross-platform solution, SpriteKit, to build the game for iOS and tvOS. It was also tvOS’s strict local storage limit that sparked the idea for procedurally-generated graphics: every graphic seen in the game, from the buildings to the shop items to the player, are all dynamically generated at runtime, substantially reducing install size and development costs. Finally, more than four months of late-night coding sessions later, Uber Shape was submitted to the App Store on January 15, 2016.
